In one fail swoop, Nintendo has become a second rate product in my min....    02/16/2009

I was originally so happy with my Nintendo Wii that I even thought of a kewl commercial for them. On a whim one night I decided to email my commercial idea to them. This is what I wrote.

We open on a playground. There is a slide off in the distance. We then shoot to the slide and there is a little child at the top of the slide holding his Wii box in his arms. Not the console but the actual box that it comes in. The little boy slides down the slide with the Nintendo box and says weeeee all the way down the slide. Next, we open with a young group of girls doing double dutch. 2 girls holding the rope and one jumping in the center. But as you look at the girl jumping rope, you notice in her hands she is holding a Nintendo Wii box. As she jumps the rope holding the box she yells out, weeeee. Lastly, we open up on 2 young boys playing catch in the yard in front of a home. They both are dressed up in little baseball shorts and have gloves and a baseball hat. But when you see the boy throw the ball, you realize it’s actually a Nintendo Wii box. The other payer catches the box and says weeee. Then in the background their mother opens the screen door and says to the boys, “you know boys, you can also play with your Wii if you want”

Pretty kewl commercial idea I thought. But this was the email that I got back from them the next day.

Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

I wanted to tell you how much I appreciated your idea for a new commercial. To us at Nintendo, it's a sign of your confidence in our products and your desire to see Nintendo be successful.

Our Marketing department's sole mission is to encourage those who haven't yet had the opportunity to try (and buy) one of our products. We have great confidence in their abilities, so rest assured that our marketing campaign is in good hands!

Now I’m pissed. Was this a joke. As a Nintendo customer, I was looking for an email from them that said, wow, kewl idea, I will be more than happy to pass this along. Now I know that nothing would ever come of it, but come on man, tell me you like the idea. Tell me you are going to pass it along to the right people. Don’t just tell me that Nintendo knows what they are doing and it is in good hands. Don’t patronize me, I’m not a child.

I just didn’t like being treated like this from the company I so loved.

Nintendo, Yuck…
