With Washington Mutual, I could go either way. With personal, banking is great, but with business, it’s terrible.    02/01/2009

I have been a customer of Washington Mutual for about 20 years now. Ever since I was about 10 years old. And as a regular person I have always received the best in customer service as well as a great big smile whenever I get to the front of the always super small line. This I like very very much. But as a new business customer of Washington Mutual, I have to say that I am very disappointed. My company has been growing pretty fast over the last few years and we now bill out about $40,000 monthly. But we only have time to make 1 deposit a week just on account of how busy we are. So when I make this deposit it can range from as low as a couple grand to sometimes as high as $20,000. Last week while making our weekly deposit, we didn't have a lot of time so we had to make it through the drive through. This happens a few times a month so it was no big deal. But on this occasion when making our deposit instead of them just depositing it for us, instead, they sent it back. The man over the intercom then said, I can’t take this, you will need to come inside. We then replied with, we can't as we are in a bit of a rush, but the teller wouldn't process our deposit for us. We then asked for a manager and where told that one would be outside shortly. But after waiting almost 10 minutes, no one ever showed. Finally we went inside and to our surprise, the manager was on lunch. Was this some kind of joke? So with more frustration, we talked to the man while he was eating his sandwich. He told us that we could only make our deposits at Washington Mutual in the morning when it was slow at their location and we could not go through the drive through anymore. We told the man that we are making large deposits and we have always been able to go through the drive through before with no problem, but he said there was nothing he could do about it. If we didn't like this new rule we could just take our business elsewhere. So with disgust, we walked out the front door and literally right across the street to a Bank of America. We very easily opened up a new account and this is where we have been making our deposits since then. We haven't closed out all of our accounts with Washington Mutual just yet but will over the next month or so. If you are going to open a personal account, I highly suggest Washington Mutual over any other, but if you are planning on opening a business account for your company, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
